From the cave

It's been a long time between posts.

2020 has been a hell of a year for the world. To be honest I haven't felt like I've had much to say especially since my writing went into a hiatus again. Oh, there's been ruminating on ideas but there's been only a couple of short story first drafts written.

I pop occasionally on social media but I'm only there for quick visits.

I even stopped the DarkSide DownUnder for a bit too. Sometimes you just need a break.

I even took a short break from reading. TV was my entertainment avenue. As was a lot of people's during lockdown.

I'm going through a flare up of the chronic conditions - you know the drill - energy for home and family first followed by everything else.

But I'm back to reading.

Currently reading:
Chocolate and Old Lace (Rosie Hart Mystery #1) by Kaz Delaney (Pssttt... HelzKat Designs designed the cover this) - cozy mystery

Last read:
Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels #5.5) by Ilona Andrews - urban fantasy with romantic elements

Next:
Marry in Haste (Marry of Convenience #1) by Anne Gracie -  historical romance

I'm also back organising the DSDU.

I even wrote a blog post about writing flash fiction this week

I'm enjoying on catching up with all the fantastic news from the DarkSiders. It really is great seeing all the names out there and adding to my TBR pile.

Super Sunday

The Plug

Check out this workshop by the talented Carla Caruso at the SA Writers Centre

Writing RomCom with Carla Caruso

Flowers, heart-shaped chocolates, and hand-written love letters… we’ve got love and romance on our minds. After all, it’s Valentine’s Day! Bridget Jones’ Diary, Confessions of a Shopaholic and The Devil Wears Prada have nailed the art of having us fall in love with the characters whilst chuckling with every page turn. Now it's your turn!

This workshop will brush up on your romantic fiction writing skills and learn how to craft a love story that’s both memorable and funny. Participants will learn about the different romance genres, diverse romantic characters, where to get published and how to connect with the romance writing community locally.

Carla Caruso is an Adelaide romantic comedy author published by Penguin and HarperCollins. Previously she worked as a newspaper and magazine journalist and fashion stylist. Some of her titles include Catch of the Day, A Pretty Mess, Second Chance and Cityglitter. She’s made the top 21 in Mills & Boon’s international New Voices competition and is a co editor of the Romance Writers of Australia’s monthly magazine.

Wiped and TV

Yep, I'm feeling wiped. I knew last week would do that to me. This week is a good week with only 2 appointments but of course there is Christmas preparation.

Writing update~
Well all is going well. Editing Gateway is nice and steady and I have finished the first draft of the Shadow novella. I'm going to let that sit for a bit. The next piece of writing I want to tackle are a couple of short stories. Though I may not start until after Christmas. Need the brain to recharge.

Reading update~
I go on about my reading on my reading blog, Eleni's Library, but I'm going well with my challenges. I haven't quite reached all the targets for the 2010 challenges yet but there are eleven days to go! :)

TV update~
Thoroughly annoyed with SyFy in the US - they have cancelled Stargate: Universe or SG:U for short. I've ranted about shows being cancelled before. I just don't get it. And really I really would like to know how they work out ratings. I do hope SGU is able to find a home on another channel. And I do think the timing for this is wrong - SGU has found it's stride I believe. I really would love to see the story arc unfold and it get it's time. I think that's the problem these days.

There are so many options for viewers that our attention span has scattered somewhat. Everything has to be go, go, go all the time, and that's not how it always works. So when there is a dip in the ratings, there is the 'the sky is falling' attitude, rather than truly examining why - is the time-slot right? Do people record the program - ie I think followers of sci-fi shows know how to work a recorder and can watch it later. But does this affect ratings? What can viewers do to keep their favourite shows alive? I know people are not investing so much effort into series now because of fear of it being cancelled, and would rather wait until it is out on DVD. So hence, less viewers, less ratings for TV - it's a wicked circle.

Anyhow, I'll get off my soap box.
