Helping Hands

Last time I wrote about the writing community and it's support. Which led me to thinking about support in general. I like to support various causes even in a small way. It doesn't have to monetary either - which brings me two causes I'm currently supporting via the internet.

The Click to Give Free Mammograms at The Breast Cancer Site, which you just have to click a button so site sponsors donate money for free mammograms. So it's Free to just click a button. You can also have an email reminder sent to you to 'remember to click' or send an e-card.

Harlequin's 100,000 Book Challange where donations are made to the National Center for Family Literacy for every book read. All you have to do is be a eharlequin member (it's free) and you can participate and you don't only have to read books published by Harlequin. Since I'm reading anyway, at least a good cause is being supported.

So just spreading the word folks. Be well.

Writing Community

I seem to be involved more with the romance writing community than any other. It's amazing witnessing the amazing genuine support in both good times and bad and see the friendships forming over cyberspace. I'm a member of the Romance Writers of Australia and the Romance Writers of New Zealand and in both groups there has been wonderful news of members finalling in The Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart award (for unpublished writers) and the RITA awards (for published writers). So Congrats to Tracey, Helene, Anna, Emily, Anne, and Kelly. You go ladies! Big whooping from here - yes, very sophisticated that is me *big cheesy smile*.

Heatwave and Technology

Adelaide was in the midst of a heat wave - 15 days with temperatures above 35degrees Celsius - that's 95 degrees Farenheit and above - the longest heatwave ever in recorded history in any Australian city. (South Australia is the driest state in the driest inhabited continent on the planet.)

Phew, let me tell you that's hot. Thank goodness for air conditioning. I think I would be a melted puddle on the floor right now if it wasn't for that . It has left me wondering about technology and how much we rely upon it in the 21st century. Electricity powers everything from the TV, stove, to this humble computer I am now typing at. I wonder how I would fair if I was to find myself in any of my fantasy story settings.

And the honest answer would be - not so good. I would get used to it as you do and learn new skills and ways but I would miss technology. I would miss ringing or emailing family or friends, watching TV programmes and movies, driving a car, listening to my fave music, going to the movies, using my digital camcorder, travelling to other countries or cities with relative ease -- and most of all, the vast availability of books. Bookstores are heaven on earth for me.

But that's not to say, I use technology for technology's sake but rather I have a respect for how technology can enrich our lives. It's a balance and I try to be as 'green' as I can.

What is the one piece of technology you think you wouldn't be able to live without?
